You will no doubt have read about cloud advertising. This is where you buy a link on someone else's site with two or three keywords that you choose. Search engines will see the link and add to your page rank, and also read the keywords and associate them with your site. This is a good idea, and cloud advertising became very popular. However it does have three limitations. Firstly, it is sometimes difficult limit yourself to two or three keywords (for example, if you run a joke site you probably want; jokes, gags, laugh, funny, funnies, humour, humor, comedy, cartoons, etc.). Secondly the pages tended to contain nothing but links, and search engine spiders are not too keen on pages like that, they give them less importance.
But more importantly, search engines do not only look at the words in the link, they look at the words around it. The people who design the software that runs search engines assume that the sentence before a link will be most relevant to that link (for example, if I put a link to an auction site in my blog, I will probably have been talking about auctions on the blog beforehand). If the link is not at the end of a paragraph, the engines also look at the sentence after it. And to a lesser extent they look at the entire paragraph (from the first blank line above the link to the first blank line below it). This means for really effective linking you need something like this:
Bob's Bargain Bucket site is a place to buy cut price buckets. Click her to visit Bob's Bargain Bucket site for your buckets and handles because Bob sells both buckets and bucket handles at his bargain bucket site.
(Or you would if your name was Bob and you sold cut price buckets and bucket handles.)
There you can see all the keywords that people might type in if they are looking for a cut price bucket, or a replacement handle for their bucket (bucket, buckets, handles, bucket handles, handle, cut price, bargain). There is text above and below the link, and it is contained in it's own paragraph. So when Google, Yahoo, etc. find a link like this on a website they give it high importance, and higher importance to the words in it.
This is the best kind of advertising you can get. This type of link will really impress the search engines and raise your site's awareness. If you want to get visitors to your site you need links like this.
