If you do not have a banner for your website, you can get text links on other people's sites. Personally I prefer text links to banner links, because you can say more, and filter your traffic even further, so get an even better selection of surfers. Also you do not have to worry about the surfer having some idiot ad blocking software that hides your banner from them (ad blocking software looks for banner links and obliterates them).
As with banner link adverts, text link adverts mean that the site visitors you get are of a much better quality. They have seen your text link and have decided that they want to visit your site. So, assuming your text link is honest and not to vague (IE you do not lie to get visitors to come to your site, or use some generic catch all slogan such as "Click here for more", without specifying what 'more' means), you will get site visitors who are interested in what you have to say or sell, and will stay on your site for some time, are likely to bookmark it, and are more likely to buy from your site.
Again this works out a lot more expensive per visitor than buying direct hits. Although you pay less per text link display than you do per direct visitor (usually about the same price as banner advertising, sometimes cheaper), you obviously do not get every single person who sees the text link clicking on it. The idea of this kind of advertising is that you only get people who are keen to see your site clicking on that text link, so obviously this means that those who are not interested ignore the text link.
So if you want to filter your traffic, and only get good surfers, this is a much better way of getting visitors to your site.
