_ If you have a banner for your website, you can get it displayed on other people's sites. Then their surfers will see your banner, and if they like your site will visit it.

This means that the site visitors you get are of a much better quality. They have seen your banner and have decided that they want to visit your site. So, assuming your banner is honest and not to vague (IE you do not lie to get visitors to come to your site, or use some generic catch all slogan such as "Click here for more", without specifying what 'more' means), you will get site visitors who are interested in what you have to say or sell, and will stay on your site for some time, are likely to bookmark it, and are more likely to buy from your site.

But this works out a lot more expensive per visitor than buying direct hits. Although you pay less per banner display than you do per direct visitor, you obviously do not get every single person who sees the banner clicking on it. The idea of this kind of advertising is that you only get people who are keen to see your site clicking on that banner, so obviously this means that those who are not interested ignore the banner.

So if you want to filter your traffic, and only get good surfers, this is a much better way of getting visitors to your site.
